As the Director of Homeless Services for Christian Assistance Ministry (CAM), Valerie Narvaez often feels like Batman putting on a cape. She leads a team of five on CAM’s Homeless Response Team, assisting one of the city’s most vulnerable and challenging populations: people experiencing chronic homelessness.
Valerie's compassion for her clients comes from her own lived experience. After leaving a troubled home at 15, she faced addiction, untreated mental health issues, and homelessness throughout her late teens and early twenties. In 2013, she embraced sobriety and completed inpatient treatment at Haven For Hope, the largest transformation facility in the nation. Since then, Valerie has been a passionate advocate for those still suffering on the streets, breaking systemic barriers and building trusting relationships with a trauma-informed approach. She finds inspiration in her husband, Roger, a Master Social Worker, author, and Clinical Outreach Worker for the City of San Antonio.
Rogelio “Roger” Narvaez Jr. has worked in social services for more than 20 years. In 2022, he became a Licensed Master Social Worker. He currently serves as a Clinical Outreach Coordinator with the City of San Antonio’s Homeless Division, leveraging his experience from the San Antonio Food Bank and San Antonio College to assist individuals and families experiencing homelessness.
His passion for helping others is rooted in his childhood experiences, which he details in his memoir, Between the Tracks, a personal account of growing up with parental domestic violence, untreated mental health issues, and unhealthy relationships.
Roger is pursuing supervision to earn his LCSW, furthering his commitment to serving underserved communities. He and his wife, who met through their work in the community, also serve on the ACTS in Recovery Team, where he mentors men recovering from alcohol and substance use.
When he’s not working, Roger enjoys spending time with his wife, Valerie, writing, and exploring food trucks.
